Surya Mudra, also known as Agni Mudra or Prithvi Shamak Mudra, is a powerful heat-generating hand gesture that activates the fire element in the body. By folding the ring finger to the base of the thumb and pressing it with the thumb, this mudra increases metabolic fire, supports weight management, and brings warmth to cold extremities. It is an essential practice for those with sluggish digestion, low body temperature, or excess earth element.
Surya Mudra is designed to increase the fire element (agni) within the body. The ring finger represents the earth element, and by folding it and pressing it with the thumb (fire), the earth element is reduced while fire is amplified. This creates a thermogenic effect that raises body temperature, accelerates metabolism, and burns away excess fats and toxins. It is particularly beneficial during cold weather, for people with naturally low body temperature, and for those struggling with weight management.
Surya means sun in Sanskrit. The sun is the source of light, heat, and energy in the solar system. Similarly, Surya Mudra is the gesture that awakens the inner sun — the fire element that governs digestion, metabolism, and transformation. The alternative name, Agni Mudra (Fire Gesture), highlights this same principle. In yogic physiology, agni exists in various forms throughout the body — as jatharagni (digestive fire), bhutagni (elemental fire), and dhatvagni (tissue fire). Surya Mudra strengthens all forms of agni. The ring finger represents the earth element (Prithvi). In Ayurveda, an excess of earth element manifests as heaviness, lethargy, weight gain, and sluggish metabolism. By pressing the ring finger with the thumb, Surya Mudra reduces the earth element while increasing fire, creating a metabolic 'turning up of the thermostat' that transforms matter into energy.
The primary purpose of Surya Mudra is to enhance metabolic function and generate internal heat. In Ayurveda, a weak digestive fire (mandagni) is considered the root cause of most diseases. When agni is low, food is not properly digested, leading to the formation of ama (toxins), which then clog the channels of the body and create disease. Surya Mudra directly addresses this by stoking the digestive fire. The mudra also supports thyroid function. The thyroid gland governs metabolism through the production of T3 and T4 hormones. Surya Mudra stimulates the thyroid, making it beneficial for individuals with hypothyroidism or slow metabolism. Beyond physical metabolism, Surya Mudra also accelerates the transformation of negative mental patterns. It provides the heat and energy needed to break through inertia, procrastination, and depression — making it a valuable tool for personal transformation.
Surya Mudra directly stimulates the digestive fire, increasing metabolic rate and helping the body efficiently convert food into energy rather than storing it as fat.
By enhancing metabolism and reducing the earth element, this mudra helps reduce excess body weight when combined with a balanced diet and exercise.
Ideal for people who constantly feel cold or have cold hands and feet. Surya Mudra raises core body temperature naturally.
Strengthens the digestive fire, reducing symptoms of indigestion, sluggish digestion, and the feeling of heaviness after meals.
Beneficial for individuals with hypothyroidism or suboptimal thyroid function, supporting hormone production and metabolic regulation.
Surya Mudra counteracts the heavy, cold, and slow qualities of kapha dosha, making it valuable for kapha-type individuals and during kapha-aggravating seasons.
If you gain weight easily, feel sluggish after meals, or have been told you have a slow metabolism, Surya Mudra can help rekindle your digestive fire.
Persistently cold hands and feet indicate poor circulation and low agni. Surya Mudra generates warmth that radiates to the extremities.
Kapha dosha is characterised by heaviness, cold, and sluggishness. Surya Mudra's heating quality provides balancing opposite qualities.
As a complementary practice, Surya Mudra supports thyroid function and can be beneficial alongside medical treatment for hypothyroidism.
Sit in a comfortable position with your spine erect. Avoid practising immediately after a heavy meal.
Rub your palms together vigorously to generate warmth before forming the mudra.
Close your eyes and bring your awareness to your navel centre, the seat of digestive fire.
Set the intention to ignite your inner fire and transform what no longer serves you.
Gently fold your ring finger so its tip touches the base of your thumb, just below the thumb pad.
Press your thumb gently but firmly over the folded ring finger, securing it in place.
Keep your index, middle, and little fingers extended comfortably. Do not strain or lock them.
Rest your hands on your knees with palms facing upward or downward — whichever feels more natural.
Inhale and visualise golden sunlight filling your abdomen. Exhale and imagine warmth radiating throughout your body.
For enhanced effect, practise Surya Mudra while facing the morning sun, absorbing its warming rays.
Surya Mudra is typically practised for 5 to 15 minutes per session. Morning practice, especially facing the rising sun, is most beneficial as it aligns with the body's natural metabolic peak. One to two sessions per day are sufficient — more is not necessarily better, as excessive heat can create imbalance. During winter months or in cold climates, longer sessions of 15 to 20 minutes are beneficial. In summer or for pitta-dominant individuals, shorter sessions of 5 to 10 minutes are recommended to avoid overheating. The mudra should be reduced or stopped if symptoms of excess heat such as excessive sweating, irritability, or heartburn appear.
If you have high pitta (excess heat, heartburn, skin rashes), practise Surya Mudra sparingly or avoid it altogether.
Reduce or skip Surya Mudra during hot summer months or in hot climates, as it can overheat the system.
If you experience excessive sweating, irritability, heartburn, or skin flushing, stop practising and choose a cooling mudra instead.
Vayu Mudra folds the index finger. Surya Mudra folds the ring finger. Double-check which finger you are folding.
Surya Mudra raises body temperature. Avoid practising during peak summer heat or in already hot environments.
Longer is not better. Excessive practice can overheat the system and cause pitta imbalance. Stick to recommended timings.
Surya Mudra supports metabolism but is not a weight loss miracle. Results come from consistent practice combined with lifestyle habits.
