Varun Mudra is a hydrating hand gesture that regulates the water element in the body. Formed by touching the tip of the thumb to the tip of the little finger, this mudra increases water content in the tissues, improves skin health, balances body fluids, and supports kidney function. It is particularly beneficial for people with dry skin, dehydration, and conditions related to water element deficiency.
Varun Mudra is the gesture that balances and enhances the water element (jal) in the body. The little finger represents the water element, and when connected with the thumb (fire), the fire element gently warms and activates the water element, improving its distribution throughout the body. This mudra is particularly effective for skin conditions aggravated by dryness, dehydration at the cellular level, and imbalances in the body's fluid regulation systems. It is often recommended during dry seasons or in arid climates.
Varun is the Sanskrit name for the Hindu deity of water and the oceans. In yogic tradition, Varuna presides over the cosmic waters and the fluid aspect of existence. Varun Mudra invokes this same principle — the nurturing, flowing, and purifying quality of water within the body. The little finger corresponds to the water element (jal), governing all fluids in the body including blood, lymph, saliva, digestive juices, synovial fluid, and intracellular fluid. A balanced water element ensures proper hydration, smooth joint movement, healthy skin, and efficient nutrient transport. When the water element is deficient, tissues become dry, skin loses its elasticity, joints stiffen, and elimination becomes difficult. Varun Mudra gently restores fluid balance by improving the body's ability to absorb, distribute, and retain water at the cellular level. Importantly, it does not mean simply drinking more water — it improves the body's capacity to utilise the water you already consume.
The primary purpose of Varun Mudra is to correct deficiencies in the water element and improve fluid balance throughout the body. In Ayurveda, proper hydration is not just about the quantity of water consumed but about the body's ability to absorb and retain water at the cellular level. Varun Mudra addresses this by improving the quality of the mucous membranes and enhancing the body's natural hydration mechanisms. The mudra is particularly valuable for skin health. Dry, flaky skin, premature wrinkling, and lacklustre complexion often indicate water element deficiency. Regular practice of Varun Mudra improves skin hydration from within, restoring elasticity and a healthy glow. The mudra also supports joint health by improving the quality of synovial fluid, which lubricates the joints. For those experiencing stiffness, creaking joints, or conditions like osteoarthritis, Varun Mudra offers complementary support by improving tissue hydration and reducing friction in the joints.
Varun Mudra enhances the skin's ability to retain moisture, reducing dryness, flakiness, and premature aging. Regular practice restores a healthy, natural glow.
The mudra improves fluid balance and filtration efficiency in the kidneys, supporting healthy urine production and elimination of metabolic waste.
By improving synovial fluid quality, Varun Mudra helps reduce joint stiffness, creaking sounds, and discomfort associated with dry joints.
Proper hydration supports healthy blood viscosity, electrolyte balance, and nutrient transport throughout the circulatory system.
Beneficial for dry eyes, dry throat, and dry nasal passages by improving the moisture content of mucous membranes throughout the body.
Water naturally cools and soothes excess heat. Varun Mudra helps pacify pitta dosha, reducing symptoms like heartburn, inflammation, and skin rashes.
Eczema, psoriasis, dry skin, and premature wrinkling respond well to improved cellular hydration from Varun Mudra practice.
If you live in arid, desert, or high-altitude regions, Varun Mudra helps your body adapt to low-humidity environments.
Osteoarthritis, joint stiffness, and creaking joints benefit from improved synovial fluid quality that this mudra supports.
If you have a fiery constitution with symptoms like heartburn, skin inflammation, or irritability, Varun Mudra provides cooling relief.
Sit comfortably with your spine erect. Choose a cool, quiet environment away from direct heat.
Take a few sips of room-temperature water before beginning.
Close your eyes and bring your awareness to your tongue and throat — the first areas that signal hydration status.
Set the intention to receive the nurturing, cooling quality of water into every cell of your body.
Touch the tip of your thumb to the tip of your little finger. Keep your other three fingers extended and relaxed.
Place your hands on your knees with palms facing upward to receive the cooling energy of water.
Inhale slowly through your nose, imagining cool, blue light entering your body. Exhale warmth and dryness.
With each inhalation, visualise every cell in your body drinking in moisture and becoming plump and healthy.
Bring your awareness to any dry areas of your body — skin, eyes, joints — and imagine them being bathed in cool, healing water.
After 10 to 15 minutes, gently release the mudra, bringing your hands to your heart with gratitude.
Varun Mudra is most effective when practised for 10 to 15 minutes, two to three times daily. For acute skin conditions or severe dryness, more frequent sessions may be beneficial. Unlike heating mudras, Varun Mudra can safely be practised throughout the day as its cooling effect is generally beneficial. Evening practice is particularly soothing after a long day. The mudra's effects are subtle and cumulative — consistent practice over several weeks yields the most noticeable results in skin hydration, joint comfort, and overall fluid balance.
Avoid Varun Mudra if you have oedema, water retention, or conditions where the body already holds excess fluid.
Excessive water element combined with cold weather can create kapha imbalance. Reduce duration during cold, damp seasons.
Varun Mudra improves water utilisation but does not replace the need for adequate hydration through water consumption.
The connection between thumb and little finger should be light and gentle. Heavy pressure restricts the subtle energy exchange.
Prana Mudra touches ring AND little fingers. Varun Mudra touches ONLY the little finger.
Hydration at the cellular level takes time. Be patient and consistent with daily practice for visible improvements.
The mudra works best when you are adequately hydrated. Drink water regularly throughout the day.
