Ardha Baddha Padma Paschimottanasana — Half Bound Lotus Seated Forward Fold

Ardha Baddha Padma Paschimottanasana is an advanced seated forward bend that combines the hip-opening of Half Lotus (Ardha Padmasana) with the hamstring stretch of Paschimottanasana. One foot rests on the opposite thigh while the other leg extends forward, and the arm on the side of the bent leg reaches around the back to bind the foot — creating the 'half bound' element.

Quick Overview

Ardha Baddha Padma Paschimottanasana is an advanced asana that demands considerable hip mobility, knee health, and hamstring flexibility. The pose combines three distinct elements: the external rotation of the hip in Half Lotus, the binding action of the arm reaching around the back, and the forward fold over the extended leg. This multi-dimensional pose requires careful preparation and should only be attempted by practitioners with established hip and knee flexibility.

Benefits of Ardha Baddha Padma Paschimottanasana

Deep Hip Opening

The Half Lotus leg position provides an intense external rotation stretch to the hip joint, building flexibility for full Lotus Pose.

Stretches the Hamstrings

The forward fold over the extended leg provides a deep stretch to the hamstrings, similar to Paschimottanasana.

Opens the Shoulders & Chest

The binding action of the arm reaching behind the back opens the shoulder joint and stretches the chest.

Lengthens the Spine

The forward fold component decompresses the spine and encourages release of tension in the lower back.

Develops Advanced Body Coordination

Coordinating the lotus position, the bind, and the forward fold requires significant neuromuscular control and body awareness.

Body Focus

Hip Joint (External Rotation)

Deep opening through the external rotation of the lotus leg

Hamstrings

Intense stretch along the back of the extended leg

Knees

Mobility challenge through the flexed knee of the lotus leg

Shoulders & Chest

Opening stretch from the binding arm reaching behind the back

Spine

Lengthening through the forward fold component

Who Should Practice Ardha Baddha Padma Paschimottanasana

Advanced Yoga Practitioners

Those with established hip and knee flexibility who are comfortable with Half Lotus and seated forward folds.

Practitioners Preparing for Full Lotus

This pose builds the hip mobility needed for Padmasana (Full Lotus) by combining external rotation with forward folding.

Students of Advanced Asana Sequencing

Practitioners exploring complex pose combinations that require strength, flexibility, and coordination simultaneously.

Who Should Avoid Ardha Baddha Padma Paschimottanasana

Knee Injuries or Instability

The Half Lotus position places significant rotational stress on the knee joint. Anyone with meniscus tears, ligament injuries, or chronic knee pain should avoid this pose.

Hip Labral Tears or Impingement

The extreme external rotation may aggravate hip pathologies. Only practice with professional guidance and adequate hip mobility.

Acute Lower Back or Sacroiliac Issues

The combination of asymmetrical hip position and forward folding may aggravate SI joint dysfunction or disc conditions.

Preparation Tips

1

Warm up extensively with hip openers such as Baddha Konasana, Janu Sirsasana, and Supta Padmasana (Reclining Lotus) before attempting this pose

2

Practice Ardha Padmasana (Half Lotus) independently until the foot rests comfortably on the opposite thigh without knee strain

3

Use a folded blanket under the hips to tilt the pelvis forward and protect the lower back during the forward fold

4

Practice the binding action with a strap if the arm does not reach the foot — there is no benefit to forcing the bind

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Begin seated in Dandasana

Sit with both legs extended forward. Flex both feet actively and press the sitting bones into the floor.

2

Place one foot in Half Lotus

Bend the right knee and place the right foot on top of the left thigh, with the heel pressing into the lower abdomen. The right knee should rest comfortably toward the floor.

3

Inhale and lengthen the spine

Lift the chest, broaden the collarbones, and lengthen through the crown of the head. Engage the left leg by flexing the foot.

4

Bind the lotus foot

Reach the right arm behind the back and take hold of the right toes. If this is not accessible, use a strap or simply reach toward the foot.

5

Exhale and hinge forward

Keeping the spine long, hinge from the left hip and fold forward over the extended left leg.

6

Reach the left hand toward the left foot

Extend the left arm forward and take hold of the left foot, ankle, or shin.

7

Hold and breathe

Stay for 5–8 breaths. With each inhale, lengthen the spine. With each exhale, release deeper into the forward fold. Keep the lotus knee active and pointing forward.

8

Release and switch sides

Inhale to lift the torso upright. Gently release the bind and the lotus leg. Shake both legs out and repeat on the other side.

Breathing Guidance

Breathe slowly and steadily — the intense hip and hamstring sensations may create a tendency to hold the breath. Use the inhale to create space in the spine and the exhale to soften into both the forward fold and the bind. If the bind restricts the expansion of the rib cage, focus on breathing into the back body and the abdomen.

Common Mistakes

Forcing the foot into Half Lotus

Correction: If the foot does not rest comfortably on the opposite thigh, the hip is not ready. Practice hip-opening poses like Baddha Konasana before attempting this pose.

Rounding the lower back excessively

Correction: Hinge from the hips and keep the spine as long as possible. Elevate the hips on a blanket to help tilt the pelvis forward.

Straining the binding shoulder

Correction: If the arm does not comfortably reach the foot, use a strap or simply keep the hand on the floor beside the hip.

Allowing the lotus knee to lift high

Correction: If the lotus knee rises uncomfortably, the hip is not open enough. Never force the knee down — this can injure the knee joint.

Safety Precautions

Never force the lotus position

The knee is vulnerable in external rotation. If there is any discomfort in the knee joint, immediately release the pose. Hip flexibility must precede Lotus attempts.

Protect the binding shoulder

Reaching the arm behind the back can strain the shoulder. Use a strap or keep the hand on the floor if the bind is not accessible.

Practice only with adequate preparation

This is an advanced pose that requires significant hip and hamstring flexibility. Attempt it only after thoroughly warming up and ideally under the guidance of a teacher.

Variations & Modifications

Ardha Baddha Padma Paschimottanasana with a Strap

Intermediate

Hold a strap in the binding hand and loop it around the lotus foot to simulate the bind without straining the shoulder.

Unbound Half Lotus Forward Fold

Intermediate

Practice the Half Lotus leg position with the forward fold but without the bind, focusing on hip opening and hamstring stretch.

Supported Forward Fold

Intermediate

Place a bolster over the extended leg and rest the forehead on it, eliminating the need to reach for the foot while maintaining the hip opening.
