Acro Yoga — Connection, Trust & Play

Acro Yoga is a dynamic partner practice that brings together the wisdom of yoga, the playfulness of acrobatics, and the healing art of Thai massage. In this collaborative practice, two or more partners work together to create poses, flows, and sequences that require trust, communication, and mutual support. Acro Yoga is as much about building relationships as it is about building strength.

Quick Overview

What Is Acro Yoga?

Acro Yoga, founded by Jason Nemer and Jenny Sauer-Klein in the early 2000s, is a partner-based practice structured around three roles: the base, who provides a stable foundation; the flyer, who is lifted into poses; and the spotter, who ensures safety. The practice includes three main categories: acrobatic partner poses (acrobatics), therapeutic Thai massage-style flying (Thai), and dynamic transitions between poses (flow). Acro Yoga builds physical strength, flexibility, and body awareness while developing deep trust, communication, and connection between partners. It is practiced both recreationally and in community jams around the world.

Why It Matters

Why Acro Yoga Matters

Yoga is often a solitary practice, but Acro Yoga reminds us that growth also happens in relationship with others. In a world that can feel increasingly isolated, Acro Yoga creates a container for genuine human connection, play, and trust. The practice teaches skills that extend far beyond the mat: clear communication, boundary setting, mutual respect, and the ability to support others while trusting them to support you. Acro Yoga also builds physical confidence and body awareness in a uniquely collaborative context, proving that strength and softness, effort and surrender, can coexist beautifully.

Key Benefits

Benefits of Acro Yoga

Builds Deep Trust

Supporting and being supported by a partner creates a profound sense of trust that translates into stronger, more authentic relationships off the mat.

Develops Communication Skills

Acro Yoga requires clear, honest communication about comfort, boundaries, and intention. These skills improve your ability to communicate in all areas of life.

Strengthens the Whole Body

Basing requires full-body stability and strength, while flying demands core engagement and body awareness. Both roles build functional physical fitness.

Cultivates Playfulness

Acro Yoga brings a sense of childlike play and joy to the practice. Laughter is a regular and welcome part of any Acro Yoga session.

Improves Body Awareness

Flying requires precise body awareness to maintain shape and alignment in the air. Basing develops sensitivity to weight distribution and partner communication through touch.

Who Is It For

Who Is Acro Yoga For

Partners & Couples

Acro Yoga is a wonderful practice for couples, deepening trust, communication, and physical connection through collaborative play.

Friends & Community Seekers

The community aspect of Acro Yoga — with partner rotations, group jams, and festivals — makes it a social practice that builds friendships and community bonds.

Yoga Practitioners Wanting Something New

If your solo practice has become routine, Acro Yoga introduces a whole new dimension of challenge, play, and connection.

Athletes & Dancers

The acrobatic elements of Acro Yoga appeal to those with a background in gymnastics, dance, cheerleading, or any movement discipline that involves partnering.

Things To Know

Things to Know About Acro Yoga

Safety Is the First Priority

Always practice with a trained spotter, especially when learning new poses. Communicate clearly about when you are ready to try a pose and when you need to come down. No pose is worth injury.

Communication Is Everything

Establish a clear system of verbal cues with your partner before lifting. Use clear language like I am ready, coming up, or down. Never assume your partner knows what you are thinking.

Both Roles Are Valuable

Base and flyer require different but equally important skills. Many practitioners enjoy both roles. Being a good base does not mean you are stronger than a flyer — each role has its own challenges.

Warm Up Thoroughly

Acro Yoga requires significant strength and mobility. Always warm up with individual yoga or targeted exercises before practicing with a partner to prevent strains and injuries.
