Quick Overview

Ardha Chandrasana is a beautiful standing balance that combines the lateral opening of Trikonasana with the balance challenge of a one-legged pose. From a Triangle Pose foundation, the practitioner lifts the back leg to hip height, balances on the standing leg, and opens the chest toward the ceiling. The body forms a shape reminiscent of a half moon.

Benefits of Ardha Chandrasana

Develops Balance & Stability

Balancing on one leg while maintaining an open torso and lifted leg trains comprehensive balance and proprioception.

Strengthens the Standing Leg

The quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and calf of the standing leg engage fully to support the entire body weight.

Opens the Hips & Chest

The lift and rotation of the pose open the hip of the lifted leg and expand the chest and shoulders.

Improves Core Strength

The core muscles must engage continuously to maintain the horizontal position of the torso and prevent collapsing.

Enhances Neuromuscular Coordination

Coordinating balance, lift, rotation, and arm extension simultaneously trains the nervous system for complex movement.

Body Focus

Standing Leg

Quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and calf support the full body weight

Lifted Hip & Leg

Glutes and hamstrings engage to lift and hold the leg at hip height

Core

Abdominals stabilize the torso and prevent the body from collapsing forward

Chest & Shoulders

The open rotation expands the chest and opens the shoulder of the lifted arm

Feet & Ankles

The standing foot and ankle make constant micro-adjustments to maintain balance

Who Should Practice Ardha Chandrasana

Intermediate Yoga Students

Those comfortable with Trikonasana and basic standing balances will find Half Moon Pose a natural progression.

Dancers & Gymnasts

The single-leg balance with an open torso directly translates to dance and gymnastics movements.

Runners

Single-leg balance and strength training benefit running performance and injury prevention.

Those Improving Body Awareness

The complex coordination required in this pose develops deep proprioception and mind-body connection.

Who Should Avoid Ardha Chandrasana

Severe Balance Disorders

The single-leg balance requirement makes this pose challenging for those with significant balance impairments.

Uncontrolled High Blood Pressure

The sustained muscular effort and head position may raise blood pressure.

Serious Hip or Knee Injuries

The weight-bearing on one leg and the hip rotation may aggravate existing joint issues.

Preparation Tips

1

Enter the pose from Trikonasana — this helps establish the correct alignment

2

Use a block under the lower hand to bring the floor closer

3

Keep the standing leg slightly bent initially and straighten as balance improves

4

Fix the gaze on a steady point on the floor a few feet ahead of the standing foot

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Begin in Trikonasana

Start in Triangle Pose (Trikonasana) with the right foot forward, left hand reaching toward the right shin or a block.

2

Bend the right knee slightly

Softening the standing knee makes it easier to lift the back leg without losing balance.

3

Shift weight onto the right foot

Transfer your weight onto the right foot while keeping the left hand on the floor or block for support.

4

Lift the left leg

On an exhale, lift the left leg to hip height parallel to the floor. Keep the foot flexed and the leg engaged.

5

Straighten the standing leg

Slowly straighten the right leg while keeping the hips stacked and the lifted leg at hip height.

6

Open the chest and hips

Rotate the chest and left hip toward the ceiling. Extend the left arm straight up, stacking it over the right shoulder.

7

Engage the core and lifted leg

Keep the core engaged to support the lower back. Press actively through the heel of the lifted leg.

8

Hold and release

Stay for 4–6 breaths. To release, bend the standing knee and lower the lifted leg back to Trikonasana. Repeat on the other side.

Breathing Guidance

Balance poses require steady breathing — the breath steadies the mind and the body. Inhale to lengthen through the torso and extend through the lifted heel. Exhale to root down through the standing foot and stabilize. If the pose feels shaky, focus on slow, even exhales to calm the nervous system and center the balance.

Common Mistakes

Hiking the lifted hip

Correction: Keep both hips stacked — the top hip should not rise higher than the bottom hip. Engage the glute of the lifted leg to keep it in place.

Collapsing into the lower back

Correction: Engage the core and keep the tailbone slightly tucked. The torso should be long, not compressed.

Locking the standing knee

Correction: Keep a micro-bend in the standing knee. A locked knee prevents the subtle adjustments needed for balance.

Looking up at the top hand

Correction: If turning the neck causes strain, gaze forward or at the floor. The neck should remain in line with the spine.

Safety Precautions

Use a block under the hand

If the floor is out of reach, a block provides stability and prevents rounding through the spine.

Keep the standing knee soft

A micro-bend in the standing knee protects the joint and allows for balance adjustments.

Practice near a wall

Have a wall nearby for support when learning the pose or if balance feels unsteady.

Avoid neck strain

Keep the neck in line with the spine. Only turn to look up if the neck feels safe and comfortable.

Variations & Modifications

Block Ardha Chandrasana

Beginner

Use a block under the lower hand to reduce the range of motion and make the pose more accessible.

Wall Half Moon

Beginner

Practice with the back of the lifted leg against a wall for support while building balance.

Ardha Chandrasana with Bent Standing Leg

Beginner

Keep the standing leg bent throughout to reduce hamstring demand and focus on balance.
