Surya Bhedana — Right Nostril Breath

Surya Bhedana, meaning Sun Piercing Breath, involves inhaling exclusively through the right nostril. This activates the pingala nadi (the solar energy channel), increasing body heat, mental alertness, and dynamic energy. It is a powerful technique for overcoming lethargy and initiating action.

Quick Overview

Quick Overview

Surya Bhedana exclusively uses the right nostril for inhalation and the left for exhalation. This activates the pingala nadi — the solar, masculine, energising channel — increasing metabolic fire, mental alertness, and physical vitality.

What Is Surya Bhedana?

Surya Bhedana combines Surya (sun) and Bhedana (piercing or breaking through). The technique involves closing the left nostril and inhaling through the right nostril, then closing the right nostril and exhaling through the left. The right nostril is associated with the pingala nadi — one of the three main energy channels in yogic anatomy, governing masculine energy, logical thinking, and sympathetic nervous system activity. This practice is traditionally recommended for increasing vitality and digestive fire.

  1. 1

Sit comfortably with your spine erect in any meditation posture.

  2. 2

Place your left hand on your left knee in Gyan Mudra.

  3. 3

Raise your right hand to Vishnu Mudra — index and middle fingers folded, ring finger and thumb active.

  4. 4

Close your eyes and take a few deep, natural breaths.

  5. 5

Observe the natural airflow in both nostrils, noticing which is more dominant.

Step-by-Step Practice

Step-by-Step Practice

1

Close the Left Nostril

Use your right ring finger to gently close your left nostril.

2

Inhale Through the Right

Inhale slowly and deeply through your right nostril for a count of 4 to 6 seconds.

3

Close Both Nostrils (Optional Retention)

Close both nostrils and hold the breath for 2 to 4 seconds if comfortable.

4

Exhale Through the Left

Release the left nostril, keep the right closed. Exhale slowly through the left for 6 to 8 seconds.

5

Complete One Round

Right inhale → (optional retention) → left exhale. This is one round.

6

Repeat for 5 to 10 Minutes

Continue for 5 to 10 rounds or 5 to 10 minutes. Maintain slow, steady breaths.

Breathing Pattern

Breathing Pattern

1:0.5:1.5 or 1:1:2 (inhale:retain:exhale)

Surya Bhedana uses right nostril inhalation and left nostril exhalation. A typical beginner pattern is inhale 4 seconds, optionally hold 2 seconds, exhale 6 seconds.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistakes

Using the Wrong Hand

Always use the right hand for nostril manipulation. The left hand rests in Gyan Mudra.

Inhaling Too Forcefully

The inhalation should be slow, steady, and controlled — not forceful.

Mixing Up Nostrils

Ensure you inhale only through the right and exhale only through the left.

Forcing Retention

Retention should be comfortable. Never force the breath hold.

Safety Precautions

Safety Precautions

Skip Retention if Uncomfortable

Breath retention is optional. Practise without it until comfortable.

Stop If Overstimulated

If you feel agitated, anxious, or overly stimulated, return to natural breathing.

Avoid in Evening

The energising effect may interfere with sleep. Practise in the morning or early afternoon.

Consult for Hypertension

Individuals with high blood pressure should consult a doctor before practising.

Best Time to Practice

Best Time to Practice

The ideal time is early morning between 6:00 and 10:00 AM when the sun's energy is rising. It can also be practised before lunch to stimulate digestion. Avoid practising after sunset or before bed.
