Chandra Bhedana — Left Nostril Breath

Chandra Bhedana, meaning Moon Piercing Breath, involves inhaling exclusively through the left nostril. This activates the ida nadi (the lunar energy channel), producing a cooling, calming, and receptive state of awareness. It is the perfect practice for cooling an overheated mind or body.

Quick Overview

Quick Overview

Chandra Bhedana exclusively uses the left nostril for inhalation and the right for exhalation. This activates the ida nadi — the lunar, feminine, cooling channel — promoting calmness, receptivity, and mental stillness.

What Is Chandra Bhedana?

Chandra Bhedana combines Chandra (moon) and Bhedana (piercing or breaking through). The technique involves closing the right nostril and inhaling through the left nostril, then closing the left nostril and exhaling through the right. The left nostril is associated with the ida nadi — governing feminine energy, emotional processing, and parasympathetic nervous system activity. This practice is traditionally recommended for cooling the system, reducing anxiety, and preparing the mind for meditation.

1

Close the Right Nostril

2

Inhale Through the Left

Inhale slowly and deeply through your left nostril for a count of 4 to 6 seconds.

3

Close Both Nostrils (Optional Retention)

Breathing Pattern

Breathing Pattern

Using the Wrong Hand

Always use the right hand for nostril manipulation.

Inhaling Too Forcefully

The inhalation should be slow and gentle to maximise the calming effect.

Mixing Up Nostrils

Ensure you inhale only through the left and exhale only through the right.

Forcing Retention

Retention should be natural and comfortable. Never force the breath hold.

Safety Precautions

Safety Precautions

Skip Retention if Uncomfortable

Breath retention is optional. Practise without it until comfortable.

Stop if Excessively Drowsy

If you feel excessively drowsy, return to normal breathing or practise an energising technique.

Avoid if Severely Depressed

The calming nature may not be suitable during depressive episodes.

Best Time to Practice

Best Time to Practice

The ideal time is evening or before bed when the calming effect supports relaxation and sleep. It can also be practised during hot afternoons to cool down. Avoid early morning if you need energising for the day ahead.
