Bhastrika — The Bellows Breath

Bhastrika, meaning Bellows Breath, is a vigorous Pranayama technique that mimics the action of a blacksmith's bellows. Rapid, powerful inhalations and exhalations fan the internal fire, generating heat, increasing oxygen supply, and awakening dormant energy throughout the body and mind.

Quick Overview

Quick Overview

Bhastrika involves rapid, forceful inhalations and exhalations driven by the diaphragm. Unlike Kapalbhati where exhalation is active and inhalation is passive, both phases are active and equal in Bhastrika. This generates significant internal heat and oxygenation.

What Is Bhastrika?

Bhastrika gets its name from the Sanskrit word for bellows. Just as a blacksmith pumps bellows to fan flames, Bhastrika uses rapid diaphragmatic breathing to fan the digestive fire (agni) and energise the entire system. Both inhalation and exhalation are forceful and equal, creating a powerful pumping action that oxygenates the blood, generates heat, and stimulates the sympathetic nervous system.

Key Benefits

Benefits of Bhastrika

Increases Oxygenation

Rapid, deep breathing dramatically increases oxygen intake and carbon dioxide elimination, energising every cell.

Generates Internal Heat

The vigorous pumping action raises body temperature, activating the digestive fire and metabolic processes.

Strengthens Respiratory System

Powerful lung action strengthens the diaphragm, intercostal muscles, and increases vital capacity.

Awakens Energy

Stimulates the sympathetic nervous system and awakens dormant pranic energy throughout the body.

Improves Circulation

The pumping action enhances blood circulation and lymphatic flow, supporting detoxification.

Clears the Mind

Increased blood flow to the brain creates immediate mental alertness and clarity of thought.

Who Can Practice

Who Can Practice Bhastrika

Experienced Pranayama Practitioners

Those who have mastered Kapalbhati and basic Pranayama techniques.

Low Energy Individuals

Provides a powerful energy boost for fatigue or lethargy.

Asthma Patients (with Caution)

Strengthens respiratory muscles when practised under expert guidance and not during attacks.

Yoga Practitioners

Excellent preparation for asana practice and for building internal heat (tapas).

Who Should Avoid

Who Should Avoid Bhastrika

High Blood Pressure

Rapid forceful breathing can elevate blood pressure significantly.

Heart Disease

Increased cardiovascular demand makes this unsafe for heart conditions.

Epilepsy or Seizure Disorders

Hyperventilation may trigger seizures.

Pregnancy

Avoid during pregnancy and menstruation.

Hernia or Recent Abdominal Surgery

Intense abdominal contractions put pressure on surgical sites.

Panic or Anxiety Disorders

The intense nature may trigger anxiety responses.

Glaucoma

Increased intraocular pressure may worsen the condition.

Preparation

Preparation for Bhastrika

  1. 1

Sit in a comfortable cross-legged position with a tall spine.

  2. 2

Place your hands on your knees in Gyan Mudra or Chin Mudra.

  3. 3

Close your eyes and take several deep centring breaths.

  4. 4

Prepare by practising 2 to 3 rounds of Kapalbhati to warm up the diaphragm.

  5. 5

Ensure your bladder and bowels are empty and stomach is light.

Step-by-Step Practice

Step-by-Step Practice

1

Take a Preparatory Breath

Inhale deeply and exhale fully to prepare.

2

Begin the Bellows Action

Forcefully inhale through both nostrils, expanding the belly, then forcefully exhale, contracting the belly.

3

Maintain Equal Force

Unlike Kapalbhati, both inhalation and exhalation are equally active and forceful.

4

Establish a Steady Rhythm

Perform 10 to 20 strokes at a steady pace — approximately 1 cycle per second.

5

Complete One Round

After 10 to 20 strokes, exhale fully. Inhale deeply and hold the breath for 2 to 5 seconds.

6

Rest Between Rounds

Breathe naturally for 30 to 60 seconds. Repeat for 3 to 5 rounds.

Breathing Pattern

Breathing Pattern

1:1 (forceful inhale, forceful exhale)

Bhastrika uses equal, forceful inhalation and exhalation at approximately 60 cycles per minute. Both phases are active and of equal duration.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistakes

Using Shoulders Instead of Diaphragm

The movement must come from the abdomen, not the shoulders and chest.

Making Exhalation Passive

Unlike Kapalbhati, both phases must be active and equal in Bhastrika.

Going Too Fast

Speed should not compromise the depth and quality of each breath.

Tensing the Face and Neck

Keep the jaw, face, and neck relaxed throughout the practice.

Hyperventilating

If you feel tingling in the hands or face, slow down or stop.

Safety Precautions

Safety Precautions

Stop If Dizzy

Bhastrika is intense. Stop immediately if you feel lightheaded or nauseous.

Empty Stomach Essential

Wait at least 4 hours after eating before practising.

Avoid if Overheated

Do not practise in extreme heat or if your body temperature is already elevated.

Start Slowly

Master Kapalbhati before attempting Bhastrika. Build up strokes gradually.

Best Time to Practice

Best Time to Practice

Early morning (6:00 to 8:00 AM) is ideal due to the energising nature of the practice. Avoid practising Bhastrika in the evening or close to bedtime as it may interfere with sleep.
