Anulom Vilom — Balance Through Alternate Breath

Anulom Vilom is the most fundamental Pranayama technique, involving slow, conscious breathing through alternate nostrils. This gentle practice harmonises the left and right hemispheres of the brain, calms the nervous system, and prepares the mind for deep meditation. It is the perfect starting point for anyone new to breathwork.

Quick Overview

Quick Overview

Anulom Vilom is a slow, gentle alternate nostril breathing technique that does not involve breath retention. It purifies the nadis (energy channels), balances the ida and pingala, and creates a state of deep calm and mental equilibrium. It is the foundation upon which the more advanced Nadi Shodhana is built.

What Is Anulom Vilom?

Anulom Vilom is derived from two Sanskrit words: Anulom (with the grain or natural order) and Vilom (against the grain or reverse). Together, they describe the alternating pattern of breathing through one nostril at a time. Unlike Nadi Shodhana, the more advanced alternate nostril practice, Anulom Vilom is performed without breath retention (kumbhaka). This makes it accessible to beginners while remaining deeply effective for experienced practitioners. The technique uses Vishnu Mudra — a specific hand position using the right hand to alternately close the right and left nostrils.

Key Benefits

Benefits of Anulom Vilom

Balances Brain Hemispheres

Alternate nostril breathing synchronises the left and right hemispheres, promoting whole-brain integration and balanced cognitive function.

Reduces Stress & Anxiety

The slow, rhythmic pattern activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing cortisol levels and inducing a state of deep calm.

Improves Respiratory Function

Alternate nostril breathing opens both nasal passages and strengthens the diaphragm, increasing vital lung capacity over time.

Enhances Concentration

The focused attention required to alternate nostrils trains the mind to stay present, improving memory retention and mental clarity.

Regulates Blood Pressure

Studies show regular Anulom Vilom practice helps lower elevated blood pressure by improving heart rate variability.

Prepares for Meditation

By calming the mind and balancing energy channels, Anulom Vilom creates the ideal internal conditions for deep meditation.

Preparation

Preparation for Anulom Vilom

  1. 1

Sit in a comfortable cross-legged position with your spine erect.

  2. 2

Place your left hand on your left knee in Gyan Mudra.

  3. 3

Raise your right hand to Vishnu Mudra — fold index and middle fingers into palm, keep ring finger and thumb extended.

  4. 4

Close your eyes and take 3 to 5 natural breaths to centre yourself.

  5. 5

Bring awareness to the natural flow of breath in your nostrils.

Step-by-Step Practice

Step-by-Step Practice

1

Close the Right Nostril

Use your right thumb to gently close your right nostril. Inhale slowly through your left nostril for a count of 4 seconds.

2

Close the Left Nostril

Close your left nostril with your ring finger, release the thumb. Exhale slowly through your right nostril for 4 to 6 seconds.

3

Inhale Through the Right

Keep the left nostril closed. Inhale slowly through your right nostril for a count of 4 seconds.

4

Exhale Through the Left

Close your right nostril with your thumb, release the ring finger. Exhale slowly through your left nostril for 4 to 6 seconds.

5

Complete One Round

Left inhale → right exhale → right inhale → left exhale. This constitutes one round.

6

Repeat for 5 to 10 Minutes

Continue this pattern for 5 to 10 minutes. Keep the breath smooth, steady, and effortless.

Breathing Pattern

Breathing Pattern

1:1 or 1:2 (inhale:exhale)

Anulom Vilom follows a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio of inhalation to exhalation. A typical beginner pattern is inhale for 4 seconds and exhale for 6 seconds.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistakes

Rushing the Breath

Anulom Vilom should be slow and deliberate. Rushing reduces the calming effect.

Using Too Much Pressure

Lightly close the nostril. Pressing too hard causes facial tension.

Holding the Breath

Anulom Vilom does not include retention. Breathe continuously without pauses.

Incorrect Hand Position

Ensure index and middle fingers are folded into the palm for correct Vishnu Mudra.

Slouching

A slumped posture compresses the diaphragm. Maintain a tall spine throughout.

Safety Precautions

Safety Precautions

Stop If Dizzy

If you feel lightheaded, stop and return to natural breathing. Reduce the count and try again.

Avoid Forcing the Breath

The breath should never be forced. Relaxed effort is the key to effective Pranayama.

Practise on an Empty Stomach

Wait 3 to 4 hours after a heavy meal before practising.

Best Time to Practice

Best Time to Practice

The ideal time is early morning (Brahma Muhurta — 4:00 to 6:00 AM) on an empty stomach. Morning practice sets a calm tone for the day. Evening practice before dinner is also beneficial.
