Bhramari — The Bee Breath

Bhramari takes its name from the black Indian bee (Bhramar). The technique involves producing a soft humming sound during exhalation, creating a gentle vibration that resonates throughout the head and neck. Quick Overview

Quick Overview

Bhramari is a gentle humming breath technique that creates internal vibrations to calm the nervous system. The soft buzzing sound during exhalation stimulates the vagus nerve, reduces stress, and prepares the mind for deep meditation or restful sleep.

What Is Bhramari?

Bhramari Pranayama is inspired by the humming sound of a bee. The practitioner closes the ears with the thumbs, places the fingers over the eyes, and produces a steady, gentle humming sound during exhalation. The vibration created by the humming stimulates the vagus nerve, activates the parasympathetic nervous system, and creates a profound sense of inner peace. It is one of the few Pranayama techniques that can be practised at any time of day for immediate calming.

Step-by-Step Practice

Step-by-Step Practice

1

Inhale Deeply

Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose, filling the lungs completely.

2

Begin the Hum

With ears closed, exhale slowly while making a steady, soft humming sound like a bee.

3

Feel the Vibration

Feel the humming vibration resonate throughout your head, neck, and chest.

4

Keep the Hum Smooth

The sound should be smooth and continuous — not loud or strained.

5

Repeat for 5 to 10 Rounds

Inhale deeply, hum during exhalation. Repeat 5 to 10 times or for 5 to 10 minutes.

6

Gradually Extend Exhalation

As you progress, lengthen the exhalation and the duration of the hum.

Breathing Pattern

Breathing Pattern

1:2 or 1:3 (inhale:humming exhale)

Bhramari uses a 1:2 or 1:3 ratio of inhalation to humming exhalation. A typical pattern is inhale for 4 seconds and hum for 8 to 12 seconds.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistakes

Humming Too Loudly

The hum should be gentle and soft — not forced or loud.

Pressing Ears Too Hard

Gently close the ears with your thumbs. Pressing too hard causes discomfort.

Straining the Voice

The hum should come naturally without straining the vocal cords.

Irregular Humming Sound

Maintain a steady pitch and volume throughout the entire exhalation.

Breathing Through the Mouth

Always inhale and hum through the nose unless otherwise instructed.

Safety Precautions

Safety Precautions

Gentle Pressure Only

Use light pressure on the ears. Never press hard.

Stop If Dizzy

If you feel dizzy or uncomfortable, return to normal breathing.

Avoid in Ear Infections

Do not practise if you have an ear infection, ear pain, or perforated eardrum.

Practise Lying Down for Sleep

For insomnia, practise in a reclining or lying down position before bed.

Best Time to Practice

Best Time to Practice

Bhramari can be practised at any time of day. It is especially beneficial in the evening before sleep, after asana practice, or whenever you need immediate stress relief. Unlike energising techniques, it will not interfere with sleep.
