Introduction to Shatkarma

Shatkarma, also known as Shatkriya, are the six classical purification practices described in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. These powerful techniques systematically cleanse the body from the inside out, removing impurities, balancing the doshas, and preparing the practitioner for advanced Pranayama and meditation. This reference page provides a complete overview of all six techniques.

Quick Overview

Quick Overview

Shatkarma encompasses six categories of purification: Neti (nasal cleansing), Dhauti (digestive tract cleansing), Nauli (abdominal churning), Basti (colon cleansing), Trataka (focused gazing), and Kapalbhati (skull shining breath). Each technique targets specific organs and systems, working together to purify the entire body-mind complex.

What Is Shatkarma?

Shatkarma is derived from Sanskrit: Shat (six) and Karma (actions). These six purification techniques are described in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika as essential preparatory practices for higher yoga. The text states that these practices should be kept secret and performed under guidance. The purpose of Shatkarma is to remove excess mucus, fat, and impurities from the body, balance the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), and purify the nadis so that prana can flow freely. While some techniques like Jal Neti and Trataka are accessible to beginners, advanced practices like Vastra Dhauti, Sutra Neti, Vamana Dhauti, Nauli, and Basti require months of preparation and direct supervision by a qualified teacher.

Purpose

Purpose of Shatkarma

The primary purpose of Shatkarma is purification. According to yogic philosophy, accumulated impurities (ama) block the free flow of prana through the nadis, leading to disease, mental disturbance, and spiritual stagnation. The Shatkarma systematically remove these blockages, creating a clean, balanced vessel for higher practices. Each technique has a specific purpose: Neti cleanses the nose and sinuses, Dhauti cleanses the upper digestive tract, Nauli massages abdominal organs, Basti cleanses the colon, Trataka strengthens the eyes and mind, and Kapalbhati purifies the lungs and energises the brain.

Key Benefits

Benefits of Shatkarma

Systematic Full-Body Cleansing

Each technique targets specific organs, providing comprehensive purification from head to abdomen.

Prepares for Advanced Yoga

Purified body and balanced doshas create optimal conditions for Pranayama, meditation, and higher sadhana.

Improves Respiratory Health

Neti and Kapalbhati clear nasal passages and strengthen the respiratory system.

Enhances Digestive Function

Dhauti, Nauli, and Basti stimulate digestion, absorption, and elimination.

Balances the Nervous System

The focused, deliberate nature of these practices regulates the autonomic nervous system.

Cultivates Discipline and Awareness

Regular practice develops willpower, body awareness, and a deep mind-body connection.

Preparation

Preparation for Shatkarma

  1. 1

Study each technique thoroughly under the guidance of a qualified yoga teacher.

  2. 2

Ensure you have all necessary equipment cleaned and ready: neti pot, saline, cloth strips, thread, ghee, etc.

  3. 3

Practise on an empty stomach — early morning before breakfast is ideal.

  4. 4

Create a clean, quiet space where you will not be disturbed.

  5. 5

Warm up with gentle asanas and centring breaths before beginning any cleansing practice.

  6. 6

Never rush into advanced techniques. Start with Jal Neti, Trataka, and Kapalbhati.

Step-by-Step Practice

Overview of the Six Techniques

1

Neti — Nasal Cleansing

Jal Neti uses warm saline water through a neti pot to flush the nasal passages. Sutra Neti uses a soft cotton thread inserted through the nostril and pulled out through the mouth.

2

Dhauti — Digestive Tract Cleansing

Vastra Dhauti involves swallowing a long strip of soft cotton cloth and gently pulling it back out. Vamana Dhauti (Kunjal Kriya) involves drinking warm saline water and inducing vomiting.

3

Nauli — Abdominal Churning

The rectus abdominis muscles are isolated and churned from side to side, creating a powerful massage of the internal abdominal organs.

4

Basti — Colon Cleansing

A yogic enema technique where warm water is drawn into the colon through the rectum and expelled, cleansing the lower digestive tract.

5

Trataka — Focused Gazing

The practitioner gazes steadily at a fixed point — traditionally a candle flame — without blinking, developing concentration and preparing for meditation.

6

Kapalbhati — Skull Shining Breath

Rapid, forceful exhalations driven by the diaphragm, followed by passive inhalations. This energising technique purifies the lungs and clears the mind.

Duration

Duration of Practice

The duration varies significantly by technique. Jal Neti takes 5 to 10 minutes. Trataka can be practised for 10 to 20 minutes. Kapalbhati typically involves 3 to 5 rounds of 20 to 100 strokes, taking 10 to 15 minutes. Advanced techniques may take 20 to 40 minutes including preparation and recovery. Most practitioners incorporate 1 to 2 techniques per session rather than all six.

Best Time to Practice

Best Time to Practice

The ideal time for all Shatkarma practices is early morning (Brahma Muhurta — 4:00 to 6:00 AM) on an empty stomach, before asana or Pranayama practice. Trataka can also be practised in the evening. Kapalbhati should be avoided late at night due to its energising effect.

Environment

Environment for Practice

Choose a clean, quiet, well-ventilated space. The temperature should be comfortable — not too hot or cold. Natural light is beneficial for Trataka. For techniques involving water, ensure easy access to clean water and a sink or toilet.

Breathing Guidance

Breathing Guidance

Breathing during Shatkarma varies by technique. During Jal Neti, breathe through the mouth while water flows through the nose. During Kapalbhati, exhalation is forceful and active while inhalation is passive. During Trataka, maintain slow, steady, natural breathing through the nose.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistakes

Attempting Advanced Techniques Too Soon

Sutra Neti, Vastra Dhauti, Vamana Dhauti, Nauli, and Basti require months of preparation and teacher guidance.

Using Improper Equipment

Always use proper equipment and ensure everything is sterilised before use.

Practising with a Full Stomach

All techniques require an empty stomach. Even a light snack can interfere with the practice.

Overpractising

More is not better. Most advanced techniques should be practised only 1 to 2 times per week.

Ignoring Medical Conditions

Never practise if you have acute illness, injury, or chronic conditions without medical clearance.

Precautions

Safety Precautions

Learn from a Qualified Teacher

All Shatkarma, especially advanced ones, must be learned in person from an experienced teacher.

Never Force Any Technique

Pain, discomfort, or resistance means stop. Forcing can cause serious injury.

Maintain Strict Hygiene

All equipment must be sterilised before and after use. Contaminated equipment can cause infections.

Consult a Doctor

Consult a healthcare provider before starting if you have any medical conditions or concerns.

Do Not Self-Diagnose

Shatkarma are not treatments for medical conditions. Seek proper medical care for health issues.

Who Should Avoid

Who Should Avoid Shatkarma

Beginners Without Guidance

Advanced techniques should not be attempted without months of preparation and direct teacher supervision.

Pregnant Women

Most Shatkarma practices should be avoided during pregnancy.

Individuals with Acute Illness

Avoid during fever, infection, cold, flu, or any acute health condition.

Those with Chronic Medical Conditions

Conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease, epilepsy, or hernia require medical clearance.

Post-Surgery Recovery

Avoid all practices during recovery from surgery, especially abdominal or nasal surgeries.
