Quick Overview

Swastikasana is an intermediate seated posture in which the feet are placed between the calf and thigh of the opposite leg, creating an interlocked and stable position. The word swastika combines su (good) and asti (to be), meaning well-being and auspiciousness. This pose is mentioned in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika as one of the four important meditation asanas.

Benefits of Swastikasana

Creates a Stable Meditation Seat

The interlocked position of the feet and legs creates a locked foundation that supports extended stillness.

Opens the Hips Evenly

Both hip joints receive a symmetrical opening stretch that improves with consistent practice.

Encourages Spinal Lift

The stability of the lower body allows the spine to lengthen naturally without conscious effort.

Stimulates Energy Flow

In yogic tradition, the locked leg position is believed to contain and redirect energy upward.

Builds Leg Flexibility

Regular practice increases flexibility in the hips, knees, and ankles over time.

Body Focus

Hip Joints

Symmetrical external rotation opens both hips evenly

Knees

Stable flexion with the feet tucked securely into the knee creases

Ankles

Positioned between the calf and thigh in a comfortable lock

Spine

Lengthened in an upright, natural alignment

Pelvis

Neutral tilt with the sitting bones grounded

Who Should Practice Swastikasana

Meditation Practitioners

Swastikasana provides a locked, stable seat that helps maintain stillness during long meditation sessions.

Yoga Practitioners with Hip Mobility

Those who can comfortably sit in Sukhasana will find Swastikasana a natural progression.

Pranayama Students

The upright stability supports the diaphragmatic control required in breathwork.

Who Should Avoid Swastikasana

Knee Injuries

Tucking the feet into the knee creases places gentle pressure on the knee joints. Those with knee issues should be cautious.

Ankle Sprains or Instability

The position of the feet between the calves and thighs may stress healing or unstable ankles.

Very Tight Hips

Without adequate hip external rotation, the feet may not reach the intended position comfortably.

Preparation Tips

1

Practice Sukhasana and Baddha Konasana to warm up the hips before attempting Swastikasana

2

Sit on a folded blanket to elevate the hips above the knees

3

If the feet do not easily fit between the calf and thigh, use a gentler cross-legged position first

4

Place cushions under the knees for support if needed

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Sit in Dandasana

Begin with legs extended, spine long, and hands on the floor beside the hips.

2

Bend the left knee and place the foot under the right thigh

Fold the left leg in and position the left foot under the right thigh, close to the right knee.

3

Bend the right knee and place the foot between the left calf and thigh

Cross the right leg over and tuck the right foot into the space between the left calf and left thigh.

4

Adjust the feet so they interlock comfortably

Each foot should be nestled securely between the opposite calf and thigh. The shins should cross at the midpoint.

5

Lengthen the spine

Press the sitting bones down and lift through the crown of the head. Maintain the natural lumbar curve.

6

Place the hands on the knees or in the lap

Rest the palms face down on the knees or in the lap in Dhyana Mudra.

7

Soften the upper body

Roll the shoulders back and down. Relax the jaw, forehead, and eyes.

8

Breathe steadily and hold

Hold for 1–10 minutes with steady, even breathing. Release by gently uncrossing the legs and switching the cross.

Breathing Guidance

In Swastikasana, the locked lower body allows the breath to move freely in the upper torso. Inhale deeply, feeling the rib cage expand in all directions. Exhale fully, releasing any accumulated tension. The breath should be smooth, even, and effortless.

Common Mistakes

Feet not securely positioned

Correction: Each foot should be tucked between the calf and thigh of the opposite leg, not just resting loosely.

Knees rising too high

Correction: Elevate the hips on a cushion to allow the knees to drop toward the floor.

Slouching the spine

Correction: Consciously lengthen through the spine. Imagine a string pulling the crown of the head toward the ceiling.

Tensing the shoulders

Correction: Regularly scan the shoulders for tension and consciously release them throughout the hold.

Safety Precautions

Protect the knees

Do not force the feet into position. If tucking the foot causes knee pain, practice Sukhasana instead.

Elevate the hips

Always sit on a cushion or folded blanket to maintain proper spinal alignment.

Switch leg positions

Alternate which leg is forward in each practice session to maintain balanced hip flexibility.

Variations & Modifications

Supported Swastikasana

Intermediate

Place blankets under the knees for comfort and elevate the hips on a bolster.

Preparatory Swastikasana

Beginner

Simply cross the shins without tucking the feet — a gentler version that still provides the locked position benefits.

Dynamic Swastikasana

Intermediate

Inhale to lengthen the spine, exhale to fold forward into a seated forward bend from the hip creases.
