Quick Overview

Parivrtta Trikonasana is the twisting counterpart to Trikonasana. From a wide-legged stance, the practitioner hinges forward and rotates the torso to place the opposite hand outside the front foot, creating a deep twist through the spine. This pose demands hamstring flexibility, hip mobility, and spinal rotation — making it an intermediate-level asana.

Benefits of Parivrtta Trikonasana

Improves Spinal Mobility

The deep twist mobilizes the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, maintaining healthy range of motion in the spine.

Stretches the Hamstrings

The forward hinge component provides a deep stretch to the hamstrings of the front leg.

Strengthens the Legs & Core

The legs must engage to support the body while the core muscles control the rotational movement.

Stimulates Digestion

The abdominal compression and release from the twist is believed to stimulate digestive organs and improve gut function.

Develops Balance & Coordination

Coordinating the wide stance, forward hinge, and rotation in a single shape builds neuromuscular coordination.

Body Focus

Spine

Deep rotation mobilizes the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae

Hamstrings

Front leg hamstrings stretch deeply in the forward hinge

Obliques & Abdominals

Core muscles engage to control and stabilize the twist

Hips & Groin

The wide stance and rotation open the hip joints

Shoulders & Chest

The extended arms create an opening across the chest and shoulders

Who Should Practice Parivrtta Trikonasana

Experienced Yoga Students

This pose builds on foundational alignment skills and is suitable for those with consistent practice.

Those with Stiff Spines

The controlled twist helps maintain and improve spinal mobility for those whose spines feel stiff or restricted.

Athletes Requiring Rotational Power

Golfers, tennis players, and throwers can benefit from the rotational strengthening and mobility work in this pose.

Practitioners Preparing for Deep Twists

Parivrtta Trikonasana prepares the body for more intense seated twists and revolved poses.

Who Should Avoid Parivrtta Trikonasana

Serious Spinal Conditions

Those with herniated discs, severe scoliosis, or acute spinal injuries should avoid deep twists unless under professional guidance.

Uncontrolled High Blood Pressure

The position of the head below the heart combined with the twist may affect blood pressure. Practice with caution.

Acute Hamstring Injuries

The deep hamstring stretch may aggravate existing hamstring tears or strains. Reduce the stance width or bend the front knee.

Preparation Tips

1

Warm up the spine with gentle seated twists and standing lateral bends before attempting this pose

2

Place a block on the inside or outside of the front foot to support the lower hand

3

Initiate the twist from the upper back, not the lower back

4

Keep the hips square and level — avoid letting one hip rise higher than the other

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Step feet wide apart

Stand with feet approximately 3–4 feet apart. Turn the right foot out 90 degrees and the left foot in 45 degrees.

2

Align the hips square

Square the hips toward the front leg as much as possible. This may require shortening your stance.

3

Inhale to lengthen the spine

Reach the arms out to the sides at shoulder height. On an inhale, lengthen through the crown of the head.

4

Exhale and rotate the torso

Hinge forward from the hips and rotate the torso to the right, bringing the left hand to the floor outside the right foot.

5

Extend the right arm upward

Rotate the right arm toward the ceiling, stacking the right shoulder over the left. Gaze toward the top hand.

6

Engage through both legs

Press firmly through both feet, keeping the legs active. Lift the kneecaps without locking the knees.

7

Maintain length in the spine

Keep the torso long and the lower ribs drawing in. Avoid collapsing into the twist — lengthen first, then twist.

8

Hold and slowly release

Stay for 4–6 breaths. To release, engage the core, untwist, and lift the torso upright. Repeat on the other side.

Breathing Guidance

Use the inhale to lengthen the spine and create space between the vertebrae. Use the exhale to deepen the twist from the upper back and abdomen. The twist happens on the exhale because the intercostal muscles and diaphragm relax slightly, allowing more rotational range. Keep the breath steady — if the breath becomes short or forced, ease back in the twist.

Common Mistakes

Twisting from the lower back

Correction: Initiate the twist from the upper thoracic spine and rib cage. The lumbar spine has limited rotational range.

Rounding the spine

Correction: Maintain length in the spine throughout the pose. Imagine pressing the back heel down while lifting the crown of the head.

Placing the hand on the knee

Correction: Bring the hand to the floor or a block outside the foot. Avoid placing pressure on the knee joint.

Lifting the back heel

Correction: Press the outer edge of the back foot down firmly. If the heel lifts, shorten the stance.

Safety Precautions

Avoid forcing the twist

Never force the rotation — spinal mobility improves gradually. Breathe into the stretch and respect your current range.

Keep the neck safe

Only turn the head to look up if the neck feels comfortable. Otherwise, keep the gaze forward or down.

Use blocks for support

If the floor is out of reach, place a block on the inside or outside of the front foot under the lower hand.

Modify the stance width

A wider stance reduces the hamstring demand but makes the twist deeper. Adjust the width to find your balance.

Variations & Modifications

Supported Parivrtta Trikonasana

Beginner

Use a block under the lower hand to bring the floor higher, allowing more length in the spine.

Bent Knee Revolved Triangle

Beginner

Bend the front knee to reduce hamstring strain while still accessing the spinal twist.

Bound Revolved Triangle

Advanced

Bring the bottom arm around the front leg and clasp both hands behind the back for a deeper bind.
